Logistics magnate Klaus-Michael Kühne died in Schindellegi, Switzerland, on 24 August 2026 at age 89. His $49 billion (€42.2bn) fortune did not pass through a will or tax office because he had no children and left no direct lines of inheritance set up. Instead, the assets moved directly to the Kühne Foundation, which he established with his parents roughly 50 years ago. The death occurred in Schindellegi, a village in canton Schwyz, Switzerland. This canton charges no inheritance tax on anyone regardless of relationship status, allowing the estate to bypass standard Swiss tax processes entirely. Before his death, Kühne owned stakes in Hapag-Lloyd and Lufthansa, while holding VTG briefly from 2016 through 2018 for a €160 million purchase that appreciated to €300 million by the time he sold it two years later. He built Kühne+Nagel during economic downturns to create one of the world's most successful air and sea freight forwarders. The foundation remains a Swiss tax-free haven where his legacy now resides without distribution to beneficiaries.
