Bank of Japan to raise interest rates by 25 basis points next week

The Bank of Japan is set to increase its policy rate, a move analysts expect will bring borrowing costs to levels unseen in three decades.

Sources familiar with the plan indicate the Bank of Japan will raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points starting next week. This adjustment would set the annual rate at 1.25 percent. The central bank has held rates steady since July but is preparing for further tightening if inflation risks persist. Economic conditions are projected to show moderate recovery while price pressures continue to build. One source noted that financial markets have remained loose even as borrowing costs increase. Current underlying inflation remains near the two percent target. Although a rising yen might lower import costs, higher fuel prices keep officials cautious about potential overshoots in inflation. The Bank of Japan has pledged to raise rates further if economic data aligns with its baseline forecasts.
