Uber ends Uganda operations after 10 years on September 2, 2026
Ride-hailing giant Uber has decided to wind down its business in Uganda, a decision that follows the exit from Nigeria. The company will cut approximately 3,300 jobs across both markets before closing services in late 2026.
Uber announced on Wednesday that it is ending its operations in Uganda and Nigeria. The company stated it would wind down these specific markets effective September 2, 2026. This move follows an internal review of business priorities and investment strategy. Uber confirmed the decision applies only to these two locations while remaining committed to other regions including Sub-Saharan Africa. The firm launched its service in Kampala in June 2016 with hundreds of drivers signed up immediately. Before leaving, services covered Kampala and Jinja. A significant reduction in employment is expected as part of this global restructuring. The company stated its immediate priority was to support local drivers during the transition but did not disclose the exact number of Ugandan drivers on the platform before the exit.
