MCX electricity futures hit record Rs 245 crore turnover on September 4
India's MCX recorded its highest single-day turnover of Rs 245 crore and all-time open interest of 1.40 lakh MWh in electricity futures.
On September 4, the Mumbai Composite Exchange (MCX) recorded a record single-day turnover of Rs 245 crore in electricity futures. Total volume reached 4.20 lakh megawatt-hours (MWh), the highest since the contract's launch. Open interest climbed to an all-time high of 1.40 lakh MWh, indicating traders are holding positions longer to manage price risk rather than entering and exiting quickly. Average daily volume grew by approximately 36% compared to the previous fiscal year, reaching 89,213 MWh. Open interest expanded nearly 45%, rising to an average of 76,357 MWh by September 3. Trading remained active across all four expiry-month contracts. Liquidity improved significantly in far-month contracts.
