Fervo Energy's Cape Station to go online next month as first U.S. commercial enhanced geothermal plant

Fervo Energy plans to launch its Cape Station project in Milford, Utah, making it the nation's first operational enhanced geothermal system. The site is expected to generate gigawatts of emissions-free baseload power.

This project would become the first enhanced geothermal system in the United States to reach commercial operation. The technology utilizes drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry to tap heat from Earth's core. CEO Tim Latimer stated the company could economically harness this energy to provide baseload, emissions-free electricity. After an initial public offering in May, Fervo secured a new offtake agreement with Google. The project aims to support the growing U.S. power demand driven by the data center boom. Traditionally, geothermal power required specific geological formations that vastly limited its potential. Fervo's approach uses enhanced geothermal methods to expand capacity. With dozens of gigawatts of output in scope, the company hopes to offer cost-competitive baseload power on a scale matching current U.S. energy needs.
