Russian Central Bank Holds Interest Rate at 14%

The Russian Central Bank kept the key lending rate steady at 14% ahead of parliamentary elections. US stocks rose Friday despite persistent inflation data.

The Central Bank of Russia announced it maintained its benchmark interest rate at 14% on Tuesday, a move expected before the upcoming parliamentary election. Authorities stated the decision aligns with economic stability requirements and does not target any specific political event. Simultaneously in financial markets, major US stock indices climbed toward their Friday close, ending an erratic week with gains. This market performance occurred despite recent inflation indicators showing acceleration in consumer prices for August at 0.4% month-over-month compared to a 0.1% increase in July. On a year-over-year basis, consumer price inflation stood at 3.4% in August, matching the previous July figure, according to Reuters data. John Saluzzi, co-founder and chairman of Thame Trading, noted that these figures remain stubborn and likely fail to please either optimistic or pessimistic market participants regarding future interest rate trajectories.
