Nigeria retail investor count rises to 2.7 million in three years

Active retail investors in Nigeria's capital market reached 2.7 million, a thirteen-fold increase over the last three years driven by digital platforms.

The number of active retail investors participating in Nigeria's capital market has risen to 2.7 million. Jude Chiemeka, chief executive officer of Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), stated that the figure represents an increase from approximately 200,000 three years ago. He attributed this growth largely to digital technology, which allows investors to access the market remotely. Chiemeka announced these figures at BusinessDay's Top 25 CEOs Awards in Lagos on Friday. The exchange aims to deepen Nigeria's capital market by increasing retail participation further. A proposed capital market master plan targets 30 million retail investors by 2030. NGX believes its digital infrastructure could enable the addition of 10 million new retail investors toward that goal. Chiemeka cited the recent banking recapitalisation exercise as an example showing how digital platforms simplify market participation, though he cut off before completing the observation.
