Supreme Court suspends Minister Mendonça after Edson Fachin orders public release of Master case documents

The head of Brazil's Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, told the Supreme Federal Court (STF) on Friday that no illegal monitoring occurred against Justice Minister André Mendonça. He stated the intelligence reports used for his removal were standard agency operations. Meanwhile, STF President Edson Fachin suspended the decision to remove both Mendonça and Police Director Leandro Almada. In a separate ruling, Fachin ordered Mendonça to drop secrecy on all documents related to the Master Bank investigation within 24 hours. This includes data involving over a dozen individuals and entities under judicial scrutiny. The move was driven by the Public Prosecutor's Office, arguing that total transparency is required unless active investigations risk interference. Mendonça contested this in a formal order published Friday, claiming he had already publicly released all available files without exception. He argued that releasing 180 specific pieces of evidence alongside the 220 made public would be improper given ongoing inquiries. Market reaction followed immediately. The USD/BRL rate rose to R$5.1342 at 3:36 PM following Fachin's order, which fears revealed documents could aid Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in his presidential campaign.
