China Pauses Approval of New Energy Storage Battery Factories
Beijing has halted new permits for energy-storage battery production plants due to fears of excess supply and intense price competition.
Chinese authorities have placed a temporary freeze on approvals for new manufacturing facilities producing energy-storage batteries. Industry officials confirm that construction projects cannot proceed as companies were not permitted to add new capacity since May. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, alongside the National Development and Reform Commission and provincial governments, implemented this measure to curb a construction spree that could create severe overcapacity despite rising global demand from renewable-energy projects. Policymakers cited fears of redundancies triggered by dozens of unfinished projects in the pipeline as the primary driver for the suspension. Ivan Li, a researcher at Loyal Wealth Management in Shanghai, stated that authorities viewed the ban as an preemptive step to ensure sustainable growth.
