Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposes a unified forum for Indian tech firms to engage foreign regulators

India's Finance Minister argues that startups cannot negotiate global rules alone and calls for a coordinated platform to interact with international governments before barriers form.

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Friday the need for a dedicated forum to unite Indian technology companies. Speaking at the Global Fintech Forum in Mumbai, she stated that foreign firms should engage with global governments and regulators through a single, organized group. Sitharaman argued that individual startups currently lack the ability to understand or negotiate complex systems abroad. She emphasized that expanding industries face growing rules regarding frontier technologies like artificial intelligence and asset tokenization. The minister suggested this new platform would help companies license technology internationally and form partnerships with more confidence. Additionally, she noted the forum could identify standards for interoperability and share best practices on data security and cyber regulations.
