Leopold Aschenbrenner's hedge fund buying options in AMD, Bloom Energy

AI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner is reactivating his hedge fund Situational Awareness with new options positions. Assets had previously fallen from a peak to around $10 billion.

Leopold Aschenbrenner's hedge fund, Situational Awareness, has resumed trading in the public markets through option purchases. Sources indicate the firm bought positions in shares of Advanced Micro Devices, Bloom Energy, and Coreweave late last week and early this week. Additional trades included SK Hynix, SanDisk, and the Roundhill Memory ETF. This activity follows a dramatic decline in the fund's assets from over $45 billion to roughly $10 billion during July. The loss was driven by leverage on AI-related stocks that Aschenbrenner owned. To prevent total failure, he sold his public equity stakes to Citadel Securities led by Ken Griffin in a rapid transaction. Despite the fire sale and asset reduction, the firm retained ownership of stakes in private companies such as Anthropic. It remains unclear whether the current options trades were funded by new capital or existing residual assets within the fund.
