Supreme Court Chief Edson Fachin orders André Mendonça to lift case secrecy

Edson Fachin granted André Mendonça until Friday to remove confidentiality from Master case documents, triggering immediate strength in the Brazilian dollar.

Brazilian currency gained ground immediately after Supreme Tribunal for Justice President Edson Fachin ordered Attorney-General André Mendonça to lift secrecy on investigation files. The directive came after Procuradoria-Geral da República requested the order. Fachin suspended a pending decision regarding Minister Mendonça's preventive removal, granting him 48 hours to respond initially. Later, Fachin clarified that Mendonça must remove confidentiality from all case documents, excluding information from active investigations. Andrei Rodrigues, PF Director-General, told the court no illegal monitoring occurred, stating reports followed standard intelligence protocols. He argued the work involved known scenario analyses rather than continuous personal surveillance. In the financial market, the Brazilian dollar reached a daily peak at R$5.1342 in sales and R$5.1525 for October futures contracts as of 15:36 local time. Investors made protective purchases ahead of the weekend due to fears that document disclosures would reveal details about Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and the Dark Horse film scandal.
