Sensex gains 138 points on closing auction to close at 74,903
Indian stocks reversed a massive intraday loss of over 1,000 points on the final trading session to end the week with a gain.
The Indian stock market closed Thursday in the positive zone after a dramatic reversal on the closing auction session. Both the Sensex and Nifty 50 were trading lower before 3:15 pm but surged above 1,000 points during the final transaction phase. The benchmark indices reversed all intraday losses and ended the day green. The Sensex finished at 74,903 after adding 138 points, while Nifty 50 closed at 23,478 with a 46-point advance. These gains snapped a three-session losing streak despite oil prices staying above $102 per barrel. Sector leaders included Power Grid and Axis Bank, which gained around 2% each. Other winners in the Sensex were UltraTech Cement, NTPC, TechMahindra, and Bharti Airtel, all rising more than 1%. Conversely, HCLTech shares dropped over 2%, and stocks from Tata Steel, Trent, ITC, Adani Ports, BEL, and Maruti Suzuki fell approximately 1%. Broader market indices excluding the final session remained negative, with Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 declining up to 0.4%. The overall market breadth was weak, showing 2,079 declines against 1,466 advances across trading data.
