ILO Convention 193 adopts Decent Work standards for Uber and platform workers in June 2026

On June 12, 2026, the International Labour Organisation adopted Convention No. 193, creating the first binding global standard specifically for the platform economy. This convention sets new rules for workers on digital labor platforms, regardless of whether they are labeled employees, partners, or independent contractors. Uber's withdrawal from Nigeria coincided with this adoption. The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) stated the move is a labor-standards event, not just a market decision. Ayoade Ibrahim, co-founder and general secretary of AUATON, highlighted the Convention addresses protections for drivers facing rising operating costs and earnings questions. He noted that platforms enter, reshape, and leave African cities without this Geneva-based framework.
