German exports fell 0.8% in July, dropping to €138.2 billion
Official data shows German exports declined for the first time in five months due to weaker demand from China and the eurozone, though US imports remained strong.
Germany's export volume dropped 0.8% in July, reaching €138.2 billion, according to provisional figures released by statistics agency Destatis. This marks the first monthly decline in five months. The contraction reflects reduced shipments to China, which fell 9.5%, and a 2.8% decrease to other eurozone nations. Markets had anticipated only a smaller decline of 0.5%. Imports also shrank 5.7% to €116.9 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of €21.3 billion. These figures follow disappointing industrial production data for July. The downturn coincides with ongoing regional instability involving the United States and Iran. Analysts at FactSet noted the actual decline was steeper than expected. Meanwhile, exports to the United States jumped 19% from June as supply chains recover from previous tariff disruptions.
