China's August car exports hit 894,000 units, a record high
August passenger-car exports reached 894,000 units, up 77.5% from the previous year, surpassing the total volume for all of 2025.
China exported more passenger cars in the first eight months of 2026 than it did during the entire year of 2025. Passenger-car shipments totaled over 6.2 million units between January and August, exceeding the roughly 6.04 million vehicles moved in 2025. August volumes alone climbed 67.1% compared to the same period a year earlier, reaching approximately 890,000 units. The China Passenger Car Association reported that exports rose 77.5% year on year in August to 894,000 units. Battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle exports increased 154.7% from a year earlier. Total vehicle exports surpassed one million units for the first time in June and remained above that threshold in July, with 5.096 million vehicles shipped in the first half of the year, up 65.3%. This surge occurred as domestic sales fell sharply in August.
