Fiji Airways begins service at Western Sydney International airport next year
The carrier joins six other airlines to operate from Australia's newest hub, aiming to capture rising demand for island tourism. Record visitor arrivals in Fiji provide context for the new route launch.
Fiji Airways will start operating flights from Western Sydney International airport beginning next year, becoming the sixth airline to commit to serving the facility. The announcement addresses a specific need identified by the Fijian community and leisure travelers within Sydney's rapidly expanding region. Fiji Airways chief executive Paul Scurrah characterized the route as a natural expansion designed to deliver the company's known service standards to this growing area. Travel demand to Fiji was supported by disruptions in Middle East airspace that occurred following events at the end of February, which impacted flights through Europe and Britain for Australian passengers. Operational costs regarding fuel have also increased, affecting airfare pricing. Consequently, travel destinations including Bali, Southeast Asia, and Pacific Islands have seen higher volume as these locations are viewed as more stable alternatives. Fiji recorded 105,791 visitors in July, a figure representing the highest monthly arrivals on record according to the Fiji Bureau of Statistics. This month marked the first instance where visitor numbers exceeded one hundred thousand. Meanwhile, cross-town rival Sydney Airport has indicated plans to introduce EgyptAir flights starting in 2027.
