EU bans foreign access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models
The US Department of Commerce blocked non-U.S. nationals from using two new Anthropic AI models by forcing a global shutdown lasting 17 days.
On Saturday in mid-June, Anthropic ceased service for its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for all customers worldwide. The U.S. Department of Commerce ordered that foreign nationals could not access these tools. Because users cannot be verified for nationality in real time, the only method to comply was to shut down the systems entirely. The services returned on line on June 17 after a blackout period of 17 days.
The situation highlights a critical question for startups: what breaks if a major supplier stops answering? Industry observers note that relying on a single provider creates significant risk when governments restrict access. Anthropic stated it complied with the U.S. Commerce Department's decision to protect national security by limiting model availability based on user location.
