Asia accounts for roughly 72 percent of global semiconductor production

The region is shifting from adopting foreign technology to building the foundational layers of the global AI economy. Asian economies contributed close to two-thirds of the growth in global AI-related trade in 2025.

Asia has transitioned from a technology adopter to a primary builder of the global artificial intelligence infrastructure. The region currently accounts for roughly 72 percent of global semiconductor production and produces over 95 percent of advanced AI accelerator chips. Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan anchor this supply chain that supports worldwide AI infrastructure spending. Beyond hardware manufacturing, major Asia-Pacific economies are developing domestic large language models and sovereign compute infrastructure backed by formal policy frameworks. Trade data indicates this shift is materializing immediately, as Asian economies contributed close to two-thirds of the growth in global AI-related trade in 2025. Additionally, semiconductor sales are projected to approach the $1 trillion mark globally in 2026. While hardware advantages are evident, structural challenges such as AI talent shortages and cross-border regulatory fragmentation persist.
