Apple iPhone Duo enters China at $2,230; domestic rivals price devices up to 19,999 yuan

Apple launched the iPhone Duo in China at 15,999 yuan ($2,230) but faces skepticism as consumers prioritize domestic competitors' pricing and designs.

Apple introduced its first folding smartphone, the iPhone Duo, at a September 9 event in Cupertino. Chinese consumers reacted with hesitation, citing higher costs compared to local rivals. One user stated they would purchase a second-generation model next year rather than the current device. The iPhone Duo is priced at 15,999 yuan ($2,230) in China, roughly half the price of Huawei's trifold Mate XT2 (19,999 yuan). Apple shares rose more than 3% immediately following the launch. Greater China represents approximately 17% of Apple's total revenue and remains one of its most competitive markets for foldables. While U.S. consumers typically earn $3,000 to $4,000 monthly and spend about $2,000 on the device, Chinese earners reported spending significantly more, up to 10,000 yuan. Competitors recently launched their new flagships: Xiaomi's 18 Fold at 10,999 yuan and Huawei's Mate XT2 at 19,999 yuan. These companies offer various designs including book-style and trifold configurations, whereas the iPhone Duo targets the flip-phone category. Apple faces a critical test in this established market where domestic brands dominate.
