President Donald Trump signed an order authorizing tariffs that began taking effect Thursday. The rules target drones weighing over 25 kilograms and those featuring thermal imaging or docking stations, subjecting them to a flat 100% duty. Smaller drone models face a 25% tariff immediately. The White House cites national security concerns regarding dependence on Chinese-made technology as the primary driver. Officials argue this reliance exposes military operations and infrastructure to espionage and supply chain disruption following conflicts like the war in Ukraine. Some non-sensitive components will also be taxed, but those duties do not apply until February 9 of the following year. China criticized the decision, stating it would harm global markets and competitiveness. A commerce ministry representative called for the removal of these levies.
