Petrol and Diesel in Europe Average €1.95 and €2.04 per Litre in Week of 31 August
European fuel prices remain near historical peaks despite crude oil trading between $73 and $126 a barrel, driven by refining costs and taxes.
Petrol and diesel prices across the European Union stayed high in the week beginning 31 August, averaging €1.95 and €2.04 per litre respectively. These figures are included in duties and taxes and come from the European Commission's Weekly Oil Bulletin. Diesel averaged €2.04, which is approximately 3% below its record of €2.11 set in April 2026. Petrol averaged €1.95, roughly 4% below the June 2022 peak of €2.03 per litre. Brent crude, the international benchmark, traded between about $73 and $126 a barrel since February's end. Although the prospect of peace between Iran and the United States has caused oil prices to fluctuate sharply, European fuel costs remain elevated due to refining expenses and availability issues. The combination of petrol and diesel accounts for 87.6% of passenger cars on EU roads. Despite various temporary tax reductions introduced by some governments since the energy shock began, fuel costs continue to stay close to historical highs.
