Verizon signs multi-billion-dollar deal for 80 million miles of fiber to 2032
Verizon has secured a long-term supply agreement with Corning to deliver over 80 million miles of optical fiber between 2027 and 2032, aiming to strengthen network infrastructure for artificial intelligence.
Verizon Communications announced it has signed an agreement with specialty glass manufacturer Corning Inc. to expand broadband capabilities and support growing AI workloads. The deal includes commitments for more than 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber from 2027 through 2032. Financial details regarding the transaction remain undisclosed by Verizon.
This pact extends a three-decade partnership between the telecom giant and Corning. The supplied connectivity solutions are designed to provide the high capacity and low latency that hyperscalers require for AI development. Verizon stated the deployment will accelerate broadband growth for both residential and commercial customers.
In related developments, Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) established an optical communications fund, known as IOWN. That fund recently selected a Spanish startup as its first investment target to advance commercialization of NTT's optical technology for AI applications.
