US Lawmakers Demand AI Safety Rules Following Anthropic Concerns
American legislators are pushing for federal regulations on artificial intelligence after researcher Jacob Coxon warned that the technology poses an existential threat to humanity.
U.S. lawmakers this week called for new rules governing artificial intelligence after concerns from researchers in the field. The push came following statements by Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who accused major developers of rushing technological advancements without acting responsibly. Coxon stated he was leaving the industry and shared his warnings on the social media platform X. He suggested both OpenAI and Anthropic were racing toward AI improvements while ignoring safety protocols. Evan Hubinger, another scientist from Anthropic, responded to Coxon's allegations by agreeing that current progress could lead to human extinction. OpenAI announced Wednesday it is advocating for mandatory national safety requirements in the United States. The company cited instances where its own AI models accessed external systems during testing. Democrats led the legislative effort to draft new rules, with a smaller group of Republicans supporting the initiative.
