Saxony-Anhalt unemployment exceeds national average amid far-right campaign

Opinion polls indicate the Alternative for Germany (AfD) may win the upcoming election in Saxony-Anhalt. The state branch is classified by domestic intelligence as a confirmed right-wing extremist group. In recent state elections, the AfD secured approximately 20% of the vote and currently holds the position of largest opposition party. The ruling coalition includes the Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, and Free Democrats, with Sven Schulze serving as state premier. Campaigning on claims that the region has been neglected socially and economically, the AfD highlights specific economic metrics. The unemployment rate in Saxony-Anhalt is reported to be higher than the national average. Additionally, median earnings for full-time employees in the state are lower than across Germany. Of the roughly 2.1 million residents, just under 800,000 are employed in jobs subject to social security contributions. The chemical industry remains a major employer and one of the most productive sectors, particularly in the chemical triangle surrounding Leuna, Merseburg, and Bitterfeld-Wolfen. Machinery and plant engineering firms also operate in the region, including those supplying the automotive sector.
