Nigeria set for $2.4 billion AGOA extension as Trump signs bill

President Donald Trump signed legislation extending AGOA preferences through 2028. Nigeria, a beneficiary nation, expressed optimism about the trade deal.

President Donald Trump signed a bill granting Nigeria and other eligible African nations duty-free access to the US market for two years under the African Growth and Opportunity Act. The enabling law expired on September 30, 2025, but the new legislation secures continuity until 2028. President Trump approved the measure after the House of Representatives voted for it by a score of 340 to 54 earlier in the year. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organisation, stated on X that she is glad to learn about the extension. She noted that the initiative should stimulate trade between the US and Africa while crediting the African Union for its patience. Nigeria benefits from the program alongside 31 other African countries since 2000.
