JPMorgan says Beijing investment curbs won't hurt Hong Kong's wealth hub status

A senior JPMorgan executive claims Beijing's recent financial controls will not undermine Hong Kong's long-term role as a global wealth management center.

JPMorgan Chase's Kwang Kam-shing, the bank's CEO of Hong Kong and head of North Asia, stated that recent restrictions by Beijing on cross-border investments do not threaten Hong Kong's future as a major financial hub. Beijing tightened rules in late May, requiring local firms to verify if mainland clients have offshore funding sources. Earlier this month, tax authorities in several mainland cities began collecting a 20% levy on profits from overseas insurance policies. Kwang acknowledged these measures may cause short-term uncertainty but argued they will not alter the long-term direction of Asia's financial sector. She noted continued wealth generation in the region and active cross-border transactions. Despite the regulatory hurdles, she maintained that Hong Kong remains vital for high-net-worth clients seeking global investment opportunities. The executive emphasized that it is premature to fully assess the immediate impact of these policy shifts.
