GQG sells $569 million of Adani Energy shares, triggering 10% drop

Adani Energy Solutions shares fell 10% after GQG Partners sold approximately $569 million of stock in India's closing auction. The unexpected supply flow disrupted hedge fund strategies targeting index rebalancing.

GQG Partners Inc. executed a significant portion of its portfolio reduction with Adani Energy Solutions Ltd., selling shares worth about $569 million during India's Monday closing auction. This transaction overwhelmed market demand, driving the stock price down by 10% in a single day. The sell-off occurred roughly 24 hours before Adani Energy faces mandatory divestment to the MSCI Inc. index as of August 31. Hedge funds had positioned long on the stock anticipating high demand from passive funds entering the portfolio upon index inclusion. However, GQG's sale injected substantial supply into the market before these passive orders could arrive. Trading data indicates approximately $569 million changed hands in the GQG deal. The resulting surplus of shares contributed to a steepest weekly decline for Adani Energy in roughly seven months. Regulatory filings show GQG held a 3.46% stake as of August 31, down from 5.1% in June 2023 due to multiple prior buy and sell transactions. The company did not provide further details on the transaction's impact.
