Australia plans $15 billion annual bioenergy feedstock market
The Australian federal government unveiled a new strategy to grow the organic resource industry to support low-carbon fuel production and reduce hard-to-electrify emissions.
The Australian federal government released the National Bioenergy Feedstock Strategy, aiming to build a $15 billion-per-year market for organic materials. The plan targets biomass resources including plants, agricultural waste, and wood to produce low-carbon liquid fuels and gases. Industry leaders state these fuels are essential for sectors like aviation, maritime transport, mining, and heavy trucks that cannot easily switch to electricity. Delorean Energy reported its SA1 facility has already begun producing gas, marking a key step toward the national rollout expected later this year. The strategy emphasizes expanding production across regional communities while leveraging existing agricultural and forestry strengths. Bioenergy is already a major renewable source in Europe, covering nearly 60% of renewable energy use there. Officials argue reliable feedstock supplies are critical for Australia's transition to net-zero emissions.
