Australia passes EV tipping point: 27,078 electric vehicles sold last month
Chinese automaker BYD confirms Australia has reached a critical milestone where battery-electric vehicle sales surpassed traditional petrol and diesel models for the first time.
New national sales data released late last week shows fully electric vehicles outsold internal combustion engine cars in Australia. Customers purchased 27,078 fully electric vehicles last month compared to 25,824 petrol-powered units and 23,680 diesel models. When plug-in hybrids are factored into the calculation, battery-electric options represent 36% of the total market share. Conventional hybrid sales accounted for the remaining portion as combined petrol and diesel vehicle figures fell below 50%. Paul Ellis, a spokesman for BYD, stated that these electric vehicles unloaded at Port Melbourne. He described the change as absolute and noted that sales are expected to rise further. Prior to this period, analysts considered Australia a laggard behind other markets regarding electric adoption due to limited model availability, high pricing, and consumer concerns about range. However, the rapid shift has occurred largely because residents seek protection from sharply rising fuel costs amid ongoing global conflicts involving energy supply chains.
