Amazon partners with OpenAI to launch ads in ChatGPT for U.S. brands

Amazon announced a new partnership allowing select American advertisers to run ads within ChatGPT, signaling confidence in the platform's growing advertising sector which recently hit $1 billion in annualized revenue.

Amazon Inc. partnered with OpenAI on Thursday to enable its U.S. advertisers to display promotional content inside ChatGPT. The initiative began with a pilot program focusing on select brands. This move follows recent sales of sponsored placements in the United States starting February, where retailers like Best Buy and Williams-Sonoma were among the first participants. Amazon reached a deal after acknowledging that OpenAI's advertising business has become a significant market force, recently achieving a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate. Although Amazon previously restricted access to its webstore for external AI platforms, the retailer bought ads on ChatGPT between April and August, becoming the top retail advertiser according to Sensor Tower data. Andy Jassy led the announcement. OpenAI started selling these placements in early 2026.
