U.S. Jobless Claims Drop to 206,000 as Labor Market Anchors Firm
Weekly initial jobless aid requests fell by 1,000 to 206,000, while the unemployment rate remained at 4.1 percent despite a recent surge in new job openings.
The U.S. Department of Labor reported that initial claims for jobless aid decreased last week, reaching 206,000 after adjustments for seasonal factors. This figure represents a decline of one thousand cases from the previous reporting period. Economists surveyed by Reuters had predicted exactly 205,000 applications for the week ending September 5. Since mid-July, requests have hovered within a narrow band ranging between 189,000 and 212,000. The government noted that it created 162,000 new positions outside the agricultural sector during August, marking the largest monthly increase in five months following only 21,000 openings in July. Despite a recent acceleration in hiring activity, the unemployment rate stayed fixed at 4.1 percent.
