Iran and Houthi Forces Resume Joint Attacks on Strait Routes Following Mokha Siege
Coordinated military operations by Iran and its Houthis proxy restarted on August 30 to seize control of the Bab Al-Mandab and Hormuz straits, while Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei announced a new strategy involving battlefield and diplomatic actions.
Hostilities escalated last week when coordinated attacks by Iran and the Houthi movement resumed against shipping lanes and allied forces. The United States confirmed it targeted two Iranian launchers on Larak Island on August 30 after monitoring preparations for sea mines directed at the Strait of Hormuz. Following this, Iran launched strikes on neighboring countries and vessels navigating critical waterways. Simultaneously, the Houthis intensified assaults on Yemeni government territories, including a siege of the coastal city of Mokha. Located approximately 180 kilometers south of Hodeidah, the strategic loss of Mokha would provide Houthi forces access to areas overlooking the Bab Al-Mandab Strait. Mohsen Rezaei, Iran's new security chief, declared on September 2 that a fresh strategy is underway across military operations, diplomacy, and economic countermeasures. Yemeni officials are actively seeking international backing to halt the advance and deny Houthi control of the coast facing the straits.
