Alphabet's Waymo to debut EU robotaxis in Munich later this year
Waymo announced plans to launch its first European autonomous vehicle service in Munich. The rollout will begin with a limited fleet of electric Jaguars initially operated by human drivers.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google and Waymo, confirmed Wednesday that it intends to introduce its robotaxis publicly in Munich later next year. This marks the company's first entry into the European market, following previous operations in the United States, London, and Tokyo. The initial vehicles will consist of an upgraded electric Jaguar I-Pace model. During the upcoming trial phase, these cars will remain under manual control while human drivers map the road network and conduct test runs with the Waymo Driver software to adapt it to Munich's specific traffic conditions. Co-chief executive Tekedra Mawakana stated that trust from local residents is a top priority and highlighted plans to create highly qualified jobs as part of the initiative.
