Average 401(k) balance hits record $155,800 in Q2 2026
Fidelity data reveals the average American retirement savings account grew to a new peak driven by market performance and increased participation.
The average 401(k) balance reached a record $155,800 in the second quarter of 2026, according to Fidelity Investments' latest report. This figure represents a 10.5% increase from the previous quarter and a 13.1% rise compared to the same period last year. The rebound follows a minor decline observed in Q1 2026. Jade Warshaw, co-host of The Ramsey Show, attributed this growth to sustained market performance and heightened participation from younger workers. She noted that economic uncertainty has encouraged many Americans to prioritize financial security. Warshaw highlighted an emerging trend among Gen Z individuals who are increasingly investing for the future. Different generations face varying motivations, with some driven by necessity while others seek long-term stability. The data suggests a combination of market conditions and shifting attitudes toward personal finance is fueling this surge in retirement savings.
