NextEra Energy obtained a $1.9 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy. The funding targets the restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center, a nuclear facility located in Linn County. This plant operates at 615 megawatts and held a power purchase agreement worth 25 years with Alphabet's Google subsidiary. Construction halted in 2020 after serving Iowa as its only nuclear power generator for 45 years. Regulatory clearance occurred in June when the Iowa Utilities Commission approved construction plans. NextEra Energy intends to place the reactor back online by the first quarter of 2029, pending final licensing from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The financial injection aims to address surging electricity demand linked to AI infrastructure expansion.
