Unicoin sues Uniswap Labs to cancel UNI trademark registration in NY
TransparentBusiness Inc., trading as Unicoin, filed a lawsuit in the Southern District of New York accusing Universal Navigation Inc., trading as Uniswap Labs, of trademark infringement. The complaint requests court orders to declare the UNICOIN mark does not infringe on UNI marks and seeks cancellation of the US registration for UNI.
TransparentBusiness Inc., which operates under the name Unicoin, filed a lawsuit against Universal Navigation Inc., operating as Uniswap Labs, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. The legal action, filed on Tuesday, requests declarations that its UNICOIN mark does not infringe or dilute trademarks claimed by Uniswap, specifically UNI, UNISWAP, and UNICHAIN. Unicoin also asked the court to cancel the United States trademark registration currently held for the name UNI.
According to the filing, representatives of Uniswap sent three demand letters to Unicoin on June 3, July 17, and August 14. These documents accused Unicoin of trademark infringement, dilution, cybersquatting, and unfair competition. The letters demanded that Unicoin stop using UNICOIN and similar marks, transfer ownership of the unicoin.com and unicoin.org domains, provide revenue accounting, and reimburse legal fees. The complaint further seeks a declaration under the federal Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act regarding the validity of those domain names.
At the time of filing, DeFiLlama ranked the Uniswap protocol as the highest among decentralized exchanges by 24-hour volume, with trading activity exceeding $3.9 billion. The lawsuit occurred weeks before a scheduled public launch for a UNCN token listed on the Unicoin platform.
