UK lends US$541 million to Tropical Forest Fund
The United Kingdom committed a loan of $541 million to Brazil's Tropical Forest Forever fund. The loan replaces an initial grant contribution previously discussed.
Britain agreed this week to provide $541 million in loans to the Tropical Forest Forever (TFFF) fund led by Brazil. The UK government will not provide an initial cash grant funded by taxpayers, citing pressure on domestic budgets under former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Instead, new Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that international climate contributions should take the form of loans rather than donations. The TFFF, launched last year for the COP30 summit, aims to raise $10 billion in public funds within its first year. So far, nearly three-quarters of this target have been secured. The fund operates as an endowment that pays eligible nations annual disbursements based on their remaining tropical forest cover.
