Jemena unveils 400km plan to link Beetaloo Basin to Northern Gas Pipeline
Gas is now flowing from the Beetaloo Basin, but two companies are proposing new pipelines to transport it to the eastern states. Jemena has confirmed plans for a 400-kilometre connection, while APA Group is assessing a project of up to 1,500 kilometres.
Gas is currently flowing from the Beetaloo Basin to the Darwin power grid, but infrastructure remains limited compared to demand on Australia's east coast. NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro stated the region could produce more gas than current markets can handle. Jemena has unveiled plans to construct a 400-kilometre pipeline connecting the basin to the Northern Gas Pipeline at Mount Isa. This line would allow northern resources to enter the eastern energy market via the existing Tennant Creek corridor. Separately, environmental assessments are underway for a proposal lodged by APA Group. Their project involves building a new line estimated at 1,500 kilometres directly from the Beetaloo Basin. One company director expects the domestic market will be served early in the pipeline's life, transitioning to export duties as capacity grows. The NT government emphasizes the volume of gas available but acknowledges that physical transport networks must expand to meet energy needs.
