Seabin partners with ReSmart to recycle waste from Sydney Harbour catchments
The startup Seabin has signed an agreement with ReSmart to ensure waste collected from its seabins in Sydney Harbour is recycled rather than sent to landfill.
Waste management company Seabin has announced a partnership with recycling firm ReSmart. The collaboration focuses on the materials removed by Seabin's floating devices operating in Sydney Harbour. Currently, Seabin runs 20 seabins in the harbor. These units filter water and trap plastic and microplastics in a catch bag. Once collected, the waste goes to Seabin's Ocean Health lab for analysis before entering the recycling stream. ReSmart will take over the collection of this processed material from Seabin. Through its existing network, ReSmart delivers these items to specialized partners. This arrangement covers soft plastics, e-waste, textiles, batteries, polystyrene, and blister packs. The goal is to prevent items caught in the harbor water from being discarded. Seabin founders Pete Ceglinski and Andrew Turton oversee the hardware installation at strategic locations. ReSmart was established by Giorgio Baracchi and Marco Prayer Galletti in September 2019. The firm assists businesses, councils, and individuals in keeping materials out of landfills.
