Polish prosecutors charge Romana Ż. in $2.1 million Zondacrypto misappropriation case
Polish authorities formally charged a suspect with stealing funds from the crypto exchange formerly known as BitBay, seeking pretrial detention while an investigation continues into estimated user losses of at least $94 million.
Polish prosecutors have filed formal charges against Romana Ż., alleging she participated in an organized criminal group to misappropriate user funds. The suspect is accused of unauthorized changes to computer records and interfering with data transmission to steal money entrusted to the exchange, Zondacrypto. She was detained on September 5 and has denied the accusations. The National Prosecutor's Office stated she allegedly misappropriated 7.8 million zlotys, a sum equivalent to $2.1 million. This charge follows the formal indictment of three other individuals on September 2 for similar offenses involving money laundering and asset misappropriation; those suspects were ordered held in pretrial detention for up to three months. Investigators have expressed concern that Romana Ż. might flee or obstruct proceedings, leading the Katowice-Wschód District Court to request her incarceration before trial. The criminal probe targets the exchange formerly known as BitBay, which ceased operations in April after customers reported frozen withdrawals and losses estimated at no less than $94 million.
