Polish lawmakers fall 25 votes short in failed attempt to override crypto veto

The Sejm voted 241-198, missing the two-thirds majority by a significant margin. President Nawrocki maintained his position against new crypto oversight rules amid ongoing industry scandals.

Polish lawmakers failed on Friday to overturn President Karol Nawrocki's third veto of legislation aimed at strengthening crypto market oversight. The Sejm voted 241-198 with three abstentions, requiring a total of 266 votes for success. President Nawrocki argued the proposed rules would overregulate the industry and increase costs. His objections included concerns regarding the powers granted to supervisory authorities. The bill sought to establish a national framework for applying the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). It intended to place oversight under the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF). KNF confirmed on Friday that Poland lacks a designated authority to supervise cryptoassets despite MiCA applying across the EU. This regulatory dispute coincides with a widening scandal involving Zondacrypto, an Estonian exchange operator declared bankrupt. Prime Minister Donald Tusk cited an expanding criminal investigation linked to the collapse as justification for pushing for stricter oversight measures.
