OpenAI claims to have solved a $1 million math problem in 88 hours
The company states it used 10,000 AI agents to crack the Navier-Stokes fluid dynamics equation. Mathematicians and researchers question the process immediately.
OpenAI announced it had developed a solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem. This is one of seven Millennium Prize Problems recognized by the Clay Mathematics Institute. The organization awarded $1 million for any correct resolution. OpenAI stated the team achieved this result in 88 hours using its internal artificial intelligence model. The system deployed 10,000 coordinating agents to process the calculation. These agents could read from a cached internet version and run code. They operated in groups with varying sizes and communication capabilities. According to the company, the final resolution was generated by one of these agent groups on September 5.
Controversy erupted quickly regarding the methodology. Tristan Buckmaster, a professor at New York University, challenged the announcement. He noted that his own team had work stored in OpenAI's Codex model. That system is designed for writing computer code. Buckmaster raised concerns about potential data leakage or access to unreleased research. In his statement, he declined to accuse anyone of misconduct but highlighted the risk of the underlying work becoming visible.
Sebastien Bubeck, an OpenAI researcher, addressed these claims during a press briefing. He denied that the company had used any prior results shared with its servers. OpenAI confirmed it was inspired to pursue this specific problem after hearing rumors about other solved challenges. The Clay Mathematics Institute has not yet commented on the proposed solution.
