India Sensex fell 555 points to close at 75,578 amid oil and IPO concerns
The Indian stock market saw broad declines on Tuesday driven by high crude prices and fears of a Federal Reserve rate hike, though smaller cap indices edged higher.
India's major stock benchmarks closed lower on Tuesday as investors weighed elevated crude oil prices and concerns over potential interest rate increases by the US Federal Reserve. The Sensex dropped approximately 555 points to finish at 75,578. Nifty 50 lost 144 points to reach a close of 23,635. Despite these losses in broader indices, two specific market categories rose modestly: the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 both recorded gains up to 0.2%. Analysts attributed the overall downturn to five key factors identified during the week's trading session. These drivers include high crude prices, selling pressure in information technology stocks, apprehension regarding a Fed rate hike scheduled for the current month, and significant capital inflow into the booming initial public offering market. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, observed that this constitutes the fifth consecutive week of a gradual downward trend. He noted that while the underlying macroeconomic conditions sustaining this movement remain active, recent investor interest is shifting toward large-cap stocks despite their currently weak performance relative to fundamentals.
