Xero apologizes for sponsored Instagram post promoting AI accountant replacement
The Australian accounting software firm Xero faced backlash after a social media campaign claimed individuals could eliminate their own accountants using artificial intelligence.
Accounting professionals criticized Xero following an Instagram advertisement that suggested clients could replace human accountants with AI tools. Personal branding strategist Amelia Sordell, who posted the sponsored content, claimed she had spent over $225,100 on accounting services since 2020. She described a task involving creating a management account spreadsheet as one that previously cost her accountant $1,500 monthly. After connecting her Xero software to the AI platform Claude, Sordell stated this work was now automated. The post included hashtags #xero and #xeropartner along with a link for six-month discounts. Critics argued the advertisement implied AI should replace human professionals, contradicting Xero's stated position that artificial intelligence must empower accountants rather than remove them entirely.
