Grindr will pay £26m to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by users in the UK. The dispute centered on allegations that the app shared highly sensitive personal data, including HIV status, with advertising companies. A law firm representing 12,000 individuals filed the claim at the high court of England and Wales in April 2024. If the total settlement is distributed equally, each user would receive an average of £2,167. Grindr stated the agreement ends a legal battle lasting two years regarding historical data practices prior to 2020. During that time, the platform was owned by Beijing Kunlun Tech. The company filed a regulatory document in the US confirming the resolution. Grindr explicitly noted the settlement contains no findings or admission of liability. The firm disputed the specific allegations but acknowledged that UK users expressed distress and lost trust concerning data handled before 2020.
