Germany gas storage at 50.14%, lowest for mid-August in years

Germany's more than 40 underground gas storage facilities stand at 50.14% capacity as of Wednesday, according to industry body Gas Infrastructure Europe. This figure represents the lowest recorded level for mid-August in several years. Storage volumes are approximately one quarter lower compared to the same date last year and exceed 45 percentage points below 2023 and 2024 levels, when robust contingency planning followed Russia's war in Ukraine. The current shortfall is primarily attributed to the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy route affected by geopolitical tension involving Iran. Operators have lost incentive to fill reserves because high summer prices reduced the economic benefit of storing gas before winter. Previously, European diversification relied on increased liquefied natural gas imports from the United States and Qatar alongside pipeline supplies from Norway.
