Fortescue ties employee bonuses to AI adoption targets

Fortescue has made artificial intelligence literacy a core component of its staff incentive plan for this financial year.

Andrew Forrest, chairman and CEO of Fortescue Limited, announced that the mining company's employees will receive bonuses based on their adoption of artificial intelligence technology. Dr. Forrest stated that all staff must embrace AI to maximize these payments. He emphasized that the goal is not merely using the technology for its own sake but integrating it into daily thinking and problem solving. Fortescue has already utilized AI to model thousands of simulations for green iron and hydrogen production, tasks that previously required years of human effort.

The company aims to achieve a 90% adoption rate and capability training within its workforce by year's end. This metric is now part of the firm-wide key performance indicators and staff incentive payments. Dr. Forrest described AI literacy as the single greatest differentiator of the coming decade, capable of distinguishing professionals from others.

While Fortescue continues to use AI for managing green hydrogen production, reports indicate the company is increasingly less invested in that specific sector compared to its iron ore operations. The decision to link financial rewards directly to technological proficiency marks a significant shift in the corporate culture regarding digital transformation.
