Foreign investors pour $3.2 billion into Indian equities in August despite index drops

Overseas buyers remain net purchasers across ten sectors in the second half of August, driven primarily by consumer services.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) injected a record $3.2 billion into Indian stock markets during August, marking the highest monthly inflow since September 2024. This massive capital entry occurred even as benchmark indices fell more than 1% throughout the month. Overseas investors maintained a net buying position across ten distinct sectors between August 16 and August 31, continuing their second consecutive fortnight of accumulation. Consumer Services drew the most significant interest during this period, attracting Rs 5,019 crore. SBI Securities reported that rising disposable income is shifting consumer preferences toward luxury goods, premium retail, and leisure travel, fueling sector growth. Financial Services followed closely with over Rs 4,000 crore in inflows. Data from the National Securities Depository confirms these aggregate figures for foreign portfolio investors.
