EDF Energy negotiating to acquire So Energy customer base in UK auction

French utility EDF Energy is among multiple bidders in a competitive sale of British So Energy. The deal reportedly targets the company's 300,000 household electricity customers rather than its operational assets.

French-owned EDF Energy is currently in negotiations to purchase the customer base of British So Energy. Industry insiders indicate the proposed transaction covers approximately 300,000 domestic electricity accounts rather than the full business operations. Ireland's Electricity Supply Board controls So Energy and initiated a divestment review this summer through PwC. The Irish parent company stated it intends to focus on its core business after evaluating potential sales options. EDF, one of six major energy suppliers in the UK with three million customers, seeks scale as market share declines against competitors like Octopus Energy and Centrica. Buyers expect the deal to add accounts directly without absorbing operational complexity. Other unidentified bidders are also involved in the auction process.
